What Freedom are you Walking in?

What Freedom are you Walking in?

The Lord Jesus is a gift to the world. He set us free from sin and death by coming to the earth and laying down His life for us so that we could live with freedom and live with Him for eternity after we leave this earthly life. So what is this freedom that Christ followers have? What is this freedom that Jesus was teaching?

“To the Jews who had believed Him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'”

(John 8:31-32 NIV)

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'”

(John 14:6)

Walk in the Spirit

To know this truth that sets people free, you must believe that Jesus is Lord. Jesus was revealing this to the Jews at the time He spoke the scriptures above, that He was not just a prophet but was God (John 8:58). He was the only one that would bring salvation to the people because through Him would come true freedom from sin. The Jews that wanted to kill Jesus did not believe this truth but His disciples did believe. They held to His teaching and shared His message. But before they went out to the world and ministered they were baptized in the power of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 1:8), (Acts 2:1-4). This is how the Christian church began. This same message that was spoke to the disciple should be the same message that Christians share today. When one becomes a Christian they should not only just believe and profess their faith by water baptism but should also be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Have you received the power of the Holy Spirit? Jesus’ truth and spiritual gifts comes from His Spirit. How are you supposed to share the gospel message of Jesus if you have not been also baptized in the Spirit (John 14:15-17)? And yes, Christians you are supposed to be sharing the gospel message of Jesus. That is why He came and died for us so that all will come to a saving knowledge of who He is and the freedom he gives from sin and death.

Sow in the Spirit

Are you feeling as though you are still walking in bondage? Do you feel defeated instead of having victory? Yes, life is hard and we sometimes need help from a counselor but don’t forget as a believer we have victory in Christ. Our freedom in this life comes from the hope we have in Jesus and the new life we have received. When we have the power of the Holy Spirit and we follow Jesus and His teachings, our eyes are opened to the sin of this world and we are given the strength to fight against the flesh and to no longer participate in it. If you continue to sow in the flesh and not the Spirit and do the things that do not bring glory to God, then you will find yourself being confused by the devil and his evil schemes. The freedom God gives is through His Spirit. This freedom is not meaning to go and do whatever you want because you are now saved, no it means the Holy Spirit has opened your eyes to do His will. His will brings freedom & joy!

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”

(Galatians 5:13)

“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”

(Galatians 5:17)
Living Life with Freedom and Joy

Living Life with Freedom and Joy

God created an amazing world full of so many beautiful people. Those lives where purposed to live with freedom and joy and not in a constant cycle of feeling sorrow and pain. The past few years have been hard with the hit of COVID and the human lives that this virus took has been devastating. It is understandable to have so many going through hardship and grief right now. The good news is that this downward cycle of heartache can be stopped with some patience, love and understanding. I listed below what a person needs in their life to help them develop a life full of freedom and joy.

How to have a Joyful Life

  • Have a relationship with Jesus Christ (Prayer and reading the Word of God)
  • Be who God has called you to be (Ask and listen)
  • Give thanks to God for all things (Make a list and be grateful)
  • Do everything without grumbling or arguing (Find joy in the suffering, see things through the eyes of Jesus) (Philippians 2:13-15)
  • Rejoice in the Lord (Praise Him for what He has given you)
  • Do only what the Father has you to do (You will have peace when it is the will of God)

Steps to Finding Peace

Are you dealing with anxiety and depression? Why? You need to ask yourself this question and ask the Lord to help you discover why you are dealing with these emotions. So much joy and peace is lost because of these joy stealers. I have listed below on how to find peace.

  1. Read the Bible & Pray
    • Read it with your heart (James 1:22-25)
    • Pray continually, rejoice and be thankful  (Thessalonians 5:16-18)
  2. Take your thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)
    • What emotions am I having with these thoughts and why
    • Wrong teaching leads to wrong thinking, which leads to disobedience to Jesus
    • Understanding the true knowledge of God leads to right thinking, which leads to obedience to Jesus
    • Think only on the things of God (Philippians 4:8)
    • Pray that the Lord gives you direction on HOW to stop your negative thoughts and make them obedient to Him (Are you listening and watching things that are evil or against the will of God? If yes, STOP!)
  3. Talk to someone you trust and have them pray with you
    • Husband / Wife
    • Friend
    • Counselor, Spiritual Leader or Personal Coach
  4. Do the next RIGHT thing
    • When fear, loneliness, grief or anxiety creep into your life, try honing your focus on doing the next right thing
    • The next thing will lead to the next thing
  5. Rest (Spirit, Body and Soul)
    • Make it apart of your rhythm of life
    • Rest is not just sleep but a mind that is free
    • Do something that fills your love tank (watch a movie, read a book, visit with friends, craft or create something)
  6. Leave it to God
    • The outcome that you have no control of is in God’s hands
